Airbourne Solutions are thrilled to have been awarded the 4 year aerial fire-fighting contract again by Natural Resources Wales (Cyfoeth Naturiol Cymru).
The contract runs from 1 March to 30 August each year, and during that time we remain on standby ready to turn out with our helicopters and aerial fire-fighting equipment within 4 hours (as long as weather allows).
Using the world renowned Bambi Bucket, our aircraft can drop 910 litres of water at a time, and with a quick turn around time to refill the bucket, this really can make a huge impact in a very short time.
The specialised bucket is suspended underneath the helicopter on a cable. When the pilot is satisfied he is in position, he drops the water by pressing a control in the cockpit which activates the release valve at the bottom of the bucket. The bucket itself is compact and portable, and allows fast filling, even in shallow water. To refill the bucket, the helicopter hovers above a suitable water source (lake, river, pond, or dunk tank) and lowers the bucket into the water. It can be refilled in a matter of seconds.
Since 1995 Airbourne Solutions have worked with NRW (formerly Forestry Commission Wales) providing aerial fire-fighting cover for Wales. Using the helicopter not only allows fires to be controlled and extinguished quickly, but also lets water be dropped in inaccessible areas, ensuring fire crews safety.
We look forward to working with the amazing crews at South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service, and North Wales Fire and Rescue Service again.
